Wardrobe Staples and Organisation

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

As I go back to work this week, I thought it was about time that I re-arranged my wardrobe into workwear and non-workwear sections. I absolutely loved living in plunge necklines while at home, but I will (sadly) be taking a step back from them now.

While I was doing this, I realised that a lot of my clothing falls into set categories, and I think I finally understand all of those '25 Wardrobe Staples You Need Right Now' articles. You know the ones I mean.

From peering into my own wardrobe, here is my version of that article.

1. Cute, short (or long!) sleeved tops.

As you'll remember from my last blog post, I am massively into the organza style puff sleeve, so that features a lot in this section for me - but it doesn't have to for you. I have a mix of colours and prints, but I would advise having at least one black, and one white option, as these are perfect for pairing with coloured trousers and skirts.

2. Bodysuits

Speaking of pairing tops, I really love bodysuits as they can't accidentally untuck themselves throughout the day like regular t-shirts can. I have a red lace option, a navy frilly one, and of course, plain black, and white options!

3. Dresses

I absolutely love dresses, and I actually own less than I think I do. This is the section of my wardrobe where the majority of them do sadly end up in the 'party' section instead of workwear, but I have a few cute dresses which are appropriate. I also have two black fitted, formal looking dresses which I wear to interviews, or on a normal work day where I fancy hearing "oooh where are you going?!" a thousand times.

4. Jumpsuits

I live in jumpsuits because they are SO easy. They completely take the thinking out of the 6am rush, as the putting together of an outfit is entirely done for you. I would recommend higher necklines for workwear, but I definitely have my stash of plunge jumpsuits in the other half of my wardrobe. See also the non-workwear friend of jumpsuits: playsuits. Same all-in-one deal, but way shorter. Super adorable for everyday life!

5. Smart, tailored trousers

I'm sure you all own these if you work in any profession where you have to look formal all the time, but these don't have to be boring. I recently treated myself to these gorgeous pastel trousers, and I love them so much. They'll look gorgeous paired with some of the tops and bodysuits mentioned above, and they avoid the all-black outfit when can sometimes occur with office wear. Pretty pastels all the way for me. Bonus points if you have a matching blazer. I absolutely love to see suits which aren't in a super boring hue.

6. Midi skirts

I developed my love for pleated midi skirts last year, and I'm so excited to wear them again to work. I have every colour under the sun, and they're so fun to twirl around in. Very easy to chuck on with a black or white top/bodysuit and head out the door looking like you put in a lot more effort than you did.

I do have one 'mini' skirt in the workwear section, but as it's fake tweed and is part of a blazer co-ord, it also works well as for formal wear and interviews. I actually interviewed for my current job in this outfit and it clearly worked!

In terms of the non-workwear portion of my wardrobe, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there is significantly less of my wardrobe that I can't wear to work.

1. Jeans

I actually barely wore jeans at all during lockdown because who wants to self-isolate in those things?! I do own some cute ones with a floral design, and one with rips and pearls. I do still think they're a staple, as they can take a plain outfit to the next level. I own a few pairs of black skinny jeans, the more stylish pairs above, and even a faux leather pair which are super flattering. I look forward to wearing them when I eventually venture further than my local Tesco.

2. Shorts

I mentioned earlier that I love to see cute suits in exciting colours, but I don't actually own one. What I do own is a blazer and tailored shorts co-ord, which is absolutely stunning. I also own a pink, and navy, pair of tailored shorts and they're also winners. I have one pair of denim crochet shorts and they're really cute for throwing on over a bodysuit (or even a swimsuit!) too.

3. Party Dresses

I've already mentioned plunge neckline jumpsuits, and short playsuits, so this is the last category in my non-workwear section. I have to say, I really own a lot of occasion dresses and have built up my collection slowly over the past 5 years. I have short sparkly numbers, ball gowns, dip hems, fishtails, plunge necklined 'barely there' clubbing style dresses - the works. As mentioned in last week's blog post though, satin dresses with a thigh split are, and always will be, my favourite.

What are your 'wardrobe staples'?! xo
