In order to take your mind off of what is currently happening in the world, here is a light-hearted post about how tasty American snacks are.
In our local shopping centre, my much beloved 'Yankee Candle' store was recently replaced. My misery was only momentary, however, when I saw that the hole it had left had been filled with more sweet, sugary goodness in the form of an American Candy store.
The first thing that I was drawn to was the chocolate moon pies. When I was little, I spent many of my childhood summers in the Caribbean. I remember falling in love with Kiss cakes, especially the 'chocolate goodie', which was a cream-filled cake, impressibly similar to a moon pie. I also bought the vanilla flavoured moon pie for good measure. Hint: chocolate is always better. I've also since discovered that Tunnock's Tea Cakes are a worthy alternative for Kiss Cakes!
While I was at work recently, I saw one of my colleagues eating what looked like a massive rectangle brownie with vanilla cream spread on top of it. It turns out that it was a Cookies and Creme flavoured pop tart, so when I discovered the store a few days later, of course I paid a visit to what I can only describe as the pop tart wall. The packaging told me that there are three ways to eat a pop tart: straight out of the packaging (4/10), frozen (in the freezer for 20 minutes - 5/10) or toasted (10/10). The topping became melted and gooey, and beautifully warming. When we are no longer social distancing, we both agree that there are a number of other flavours that we want to try, including chocolate fudge, blueberry, and chocolate chip cookie dough.
Going back to my childhood, another snack which I absolutely devoured were Cheetos. I particularly enjoyed the flamin' hot stick variety, similar to a bag of Nik Naks which can be found in the UK. I only regret not buying enough of these, and will absolutely be heading back for more as soon as I can.
Keeping with the crisps, there was a wide variety of Pringles on offer in the store too. Only, these weren't just your basic sour cream and onion - there was a whole host of flavours we were unfamiliar with - Jalapeño; Honey Mustard; Sweet and Tangy Barbeque; and Ranch, to name a few. We were a little unadventurous with our choice, opting for Cheddar, but we weren't disappointed!
Finally, I found it so hard to walk past these 'Very Berry' Cheerios. I have always loved Honey Cheerios as my breakfast of choice over here, but these look so amazing. I will absolutely be back for them.
What are your favourite UK/US snacks?!
