tattoo #12 – a film by kirk

Updated: Apr 18, 2022

If you know me in real life, you know that I am 100% obsessed with Gilmore Girls, and since I got my first GG tattoo in April of last year, it seemed about time that I get my second.

There isn’t a huge amount to say about this one, but it’s quirky and cute, and I love it. It says ‘a film by kirk’ behind my left arm, above my elbow – symmetrical to my ‘go with grace’ tattoo behind my right arm. I love that it’s subtle enough to be a GG reference that only fans of the show would know, a real 'if you know, you know' moment because it's super obscure, and I’m excited to see the reaction to it that I might get when out in summer dresses in public, when the weather gets warmer.

I feel like Kirk is a character who some people would argue doesn’t have a big enough role to be a fan favourite, and while he isn’t my favourite character either, (it’s Lorelai), he always makes me laugh in the scenes that he is in, and it just wouldn’t be the same show without him. He’s pretty much got a different job in every single episode, and show writer Amy Sherman-Palladino actually named him something else in the pilot, (Mick), forgot she’d already named the character, and then brought him back for every further episode as ‘Kirk’, and if that doesn’t sum up the character, then I’m not sure what will. He’s always doing the craziest things, like writing and acting in a black and white film that he has been working on for five years, and then begging Lorelai to play it at the town film festival. It’s a short film about him meeting his partner’s family for the first time, and features a scene of him dancing manically to ‘White Lines’ by Melle Mel. It’s honestly Gilmore Girls at it’s best, and it makes me laugh out loud every time I watch the scene so of course I wanted a tattoo to remember how silly my favourite show can be sometimes.

This is a matching tattoo with one of my lovely tattoo artists, Maly, who you might remember as the artist behind my stunning mirrorball tattoo that I am still absolutely obsessed with. I’m honoured that she wanted to get a matching tattoo with me, it was such a fun thing to do, and I love it! Maly also made an adorable reel of us getting our tattoos which you can watch here.

This one took literally no time at all, and it didn't hurt at all either, just like the tattoo behind my right arm didn’t hurt either. We love quick, pain-free tattoos!

As always, I've popped this into the 'tattoos' category on my blog, so feel free to have a scroll through that if you missed any of my previous run-downs of my tattoos.
