Learning Brush Calligraphy

Updated: Oct 10, 2020

Tomorrow is a month since I started learning brush calligraphy, so go easy on me! It's a skill that takes a lot of time and practise, but I'm absolutely loving learning. I find it so therapeutic writing out new phrases, and learning how to make every single letter as pretty as possible. It's an art form - quite literally, as I have decorated one of our kitchen walls with my favourite phrases that I've lettered.

I learnt from Alina, owner of Creative Feel Designs. She is an incredible calligraphy teacher who is based in Brighton, almost 100 miles away from where I live. If one good thing has happened during the current situation, it's that we can now learn from people online that we probably would never have met in person.

I was super excited when I found her website, and bought the Kit + Class Video package which signed me up for a workbook (some filled in example pages above) with pens, which I received in the post a short few days later, access to a 1 hour class video demonstrating the process of completing the workbook, tips and tricks, product recommendations and the offer of 4 week email support. I highly recommend Alina - she's incredibly friendly and supportive!

She has also recently brought out transfer tattoos on non-toxic paper, which are perfect for Summer so check those out, too!

About a week later, I bought these from WH Smith and started experimenting with colours, and I particularly love tip to tip blending to fade two colours into each other, which these are perfect for.

Please enjoy some photos of my brush calligraphy below!

Note: 'in omnia paratus' is a quote from Gilmore Girls (which I have now started rewatching - if you read one of my last posts, you know that I was shocked I wasn't using this time to do so!) Anyway, it means 'ready for anything'.

As seen above, I'm particularly proud of the self-love/empowering designs I created while listening to a mental health and counselling course (another lockdown passion project!)

However, my proudest creation has to be my first ever birthday card which I actually sent off to my fiancé's Dad! I sent someone a card that I made myself with a new skill I learnt - how cool is that?!

I can't wait to keep learning, and to keep lettering.

Have you learnt a new skill during lockdown?! xo
