During this time while so many of us have become confined to the space of our houses, here are some fun things to do to pass the time. I'm lucky because my fiancé and I live together, but I recognise that this time of isolation is significantly improved when you have someone to hang out with.
Play 'Just Dance' - I can't take credit for this one, as it was actually some of students that came up with this idea. We were all bored during our final tutor time (for a while) in the absence of our usual assembly, so I allowed them to play Just Dance. Most of the clips are on Youtube and it's a really fun way to get some exercise. Can be played on your own too! Everybody (Backstreet's Back) is one of my favourites to jump around to, and I highly recommend. Alternatively, put on your favourite Spotify playlist and have a dance party!
Have a Games Night - Whip out the board games for this one. It's always fun to take some time away from screens, and this seems like the best time to do this. Reconnect with the people you live with, and play a game of cards, or Cluedo. If you were ever worried about an entire day being wasted due to a game of Monopoly, fear no more.
Watch Netflix - this one sounds simple. and that's because it is. There is an array of fantastic shows and films, both British and foreign. Transform the lounge into a blanket fort, turn the lights off, make some microwave popcorn if you have any and get cosy with a great film. Stephen and I recently watched A Quiet Place at the same time as his parents, while in our own respective homes and had a virtual joint date night. Adorable. Best film I've seen in a while, too! We were old fashioned and just told each other when we were going to start the movie and when we paused, but there's now an app which does this for you called Netflix Party!
Learn a New Recipe - If you're like me, you probably have a thousand cookbooks lying around the kitchen and just never have enough time to learn anything new from them. Now is the time. Cooking may actually even be more fun because as we all know, there are some ingredients that we just can't get our hands on at the moment. Therefore, it'll be fun working out what we can effectively substitute these ingredients for in our favourite dishes. I've been watching a lot Bon Appétit videos on Youtube for inspiration, and managed to find a new favourite pizza recipe, which I'll post next week.
Download Some Mobile Games - Resist the urge to spend £200 on a Nintendo Switch so that you can play Animal Crossing New Horizons, even though it's all you want to do. Sorry, that was more me thinking out loud there. But, seriously. There are some really fun FREE games available in the App/Play Store. My favourites are:
Single-player:
o Animal Crossing Pocket Camp
o Between the Lines (essentially the mobile version of Dingbats, which I mentioned in my Board Games post)
o Animal Restaurant
o Codycross
Will need at least one more person:
o Spaceteam
o Heads Up!
o Psych
I also found the simple act of painting my nails yellow helpful! It's just a little pop of colour which brightens up my day. We all know how much we're washing our hands lately, so why not make your nails look like sunshine? We have so much extra time for our self care routines at the moment, too. Wash your hair, do a face mask, spring clean your apartment.
I recommended one of my favourite face masks in my Skincare Favourites post, if you're looking for a good one.
Note: If you want to use this time to learn how to play an instrument, or learn a language then please do. However, I want to be clear that not all of this time needs to be spent productively. You do not need to spend every minute writing the next best-selling novel. This is a strange and scary time for all of us and it's absolutely okay to do nothing.
Remember to virtually keep in touch with your friends and family, and stay safe. xo
