Calligraphy Update - Sparkly Paints!

At the time of writing, it is currently October 10th which is World Mental Health Day. Due to this, I thought I would put up a quick post about something that has massively improved my mental health since I started learning in May. I've also taken the day off from social media (which you'll remember I did last month for Digital Detox Day - I love doing this) Let me know in the comments what you did for World Mental Health Day!

Last week Saturday, I took Alina's (Creative Feel Designs) Intermediate Brush Lettering Course on Zoom, and I had the best time. I loved doing some live lettering with a bunch of other lovely ladies who were all learning this incredible new art skill along with me. We learnt how to identify our own lettering style, as no two people letter in exactly the same way (which is SO cool!). I discovered that my lettering is quite stretched out, bouncy, and in my opinion, elegant.

We also did an exercise where we lettered the alphabet by choosing between one of the three different styles of calligraphy for each letter. I found myself mostly choosing the letters in the middle column as they were the most flourished and curly, which is quite close to my usual handwriting anyway. It's really interesting how our different personalities are reflected in our lettering styles, and I love developing my personal style.

We also learnt some more techniques for flourishing our letters, and a new way of lettering which involves 'underlining' where the letters curl underneath themselves and backwards instead of into the following letter - demonstrated on the word 'bright' below.

I've also been playing around with sparkly Finetec paints which give my calligraphy more of a glittery, luxurious quality. If you know me, you know that I love glitter, so I'm incredibly excited to be learning how to incorporate some glitz and glamour into my lettering.

Here is a side by side of my art wall when I first started learning in May, and earlier this week. I'm particularly obsessed with the glittery rose gold watercolour paint I used for the 'be brave enough to be bad at something new' print.

I'm so proud of my newfound skills and I'm considering starting to sell my art, so let me know if any of you incredible smallbutfierce readers would be interested in that!

What is one thing you do for your mental health? xo
