If you're on Instagram, and you have a sweet tooth - you've most likely heard of 'Baked by Steph'. I recently came across the brand on Insta, and absolutely adored how cute, (and sometimes hilarious!), the cookies are. While shopping for Stephen's Valentine's gifts this year, I noticed that 'Baked by Steph' had brought out a DIY cookie decorating kit, and it was too adorable to resist so I bought it as something we could do together during lockdown - remembering what I learnt about experience gifts making us happier for longer, as they're fleeting and not material!
The kit was solely made for Valentine's Day so I can't link it, but I'm sure they will make similar kits in the future for other events. We absolutely loved the experience, and would 100% do it again. The instructions were so clear and easy to follow, plus the kit came with everything we needed to be able to learn how to properly ice, and decorate the cookies, including 10 adorable heart-shaped cookies, piping bags, 3 different colours of icing, a practice icing sheet, (I loved this), and a cookie scribe which I've never come across before. It's basically a little pick which helps you to spread the icing around the cookie, particularly into tough to reach corners. Stephen got really creative with it and used the scribe to help him marble the icing on one of his cookies, which turned out incredibly pretty.
I've tried my hand at icing before, but I'd never really been confident with it before. What I really loved the most was being able to learn the difference between 'outline' icing, and 'flooding' icing, which is mainly that outline icing is thicker, and flooding icing is a little more watered-down in consistency so that it's thinner and flows more smoothly out of the piping bag, to fill in the centre of the cookie. The more you know!
It was such a fun experience to decorate the cookies together, and eating them was even better. Baked by Steph also sell pre-decorated cookies, which look incredible, and you can even purchase a personalised message cookie box from their website, so you can tell a friend anything you want to via sweet treat! The absolute dream.
